Google Gemini Introduces “Personal Context” and “Temporary Chat” Features for Smarter Conversations

Google Gemini Unveils Groundbreaking Personalization and Privacy Features

Google has started rolling out two significant updates to its Gemini AI app, aimed at enhancing user experience through smarter, more tailored interactions and improved privacy controls. The newly introduced features are “Personal Context” and “Temporary Chat,” both designed to make conversations with Gemini more natural, flexible, and secure.

Personal Context: Learning From Your Past Conversations

The Personal Context feature enables Gemini to remember details and preferences shared in previous chats, allowing it to engage in conversations with greater familiarity and nuance—as if talking to a well-informed companion. For instance, if you previously discussed the evolving powers of your favorite comic book characters and later ask for birthday party ideas, Gemini might suggest a party theme centered on that character, including tailored decorations and themed foods. Similarly, if you asked earlier for YouTube channel ideas about Japanese culture, it may later propose a video titled “My First Experience” focused on traditional Japanese cuisine or crafts.

This new feature replaces the existing “Saved Information” setting with a dedicated Personal Context settings page that gives users the option to enable or disable the remembrance of past conversations with Gemini at any time.

Currently, the rollout begins with Gemini 2.5 Pro users in select countries, including both free and paid users, and will soon expand to Gemini 2.5 Flash, as well as to users in the European Union, United Kingdom, and Switzerland within the upcoming weeks.

Temporary Chat: Private Conversations Without Lasting Records

Temporary Chat offers a mode where users can initiate conversations with Gemini that don’t affect future interactions or appear in their activity logs, similar to incognito browsing in web browsers. This feature is ideal for asking sensitive questions or exploring off-topic ideas without impacting the AI’s learning or personalization. These temporary chats are not utilized for training Gemini’s AI models and are stored only for up to 72 hours strictly for response purposes and feedback processing.

Users can access Temporary Chat via the sidebar menu in the app, by clicking on a new chat icon next to “New Chat.” A special screen will confirm the “Temporary Chat” mode, alongside detailed privacy information.

Additional Settings Enhancements

Gemini’s settings have also been refined with several key adjustments:

  • The “Gemini App Activity” option is renamed to “Keep Activity” retaining its existing functionalities.
  • A new control toggles access to microphone, camera, and screen sharing for improving Google’s services—set to off by default to prioritize user privacy.

Empowering Users with Smarter, More Private AI

With these updates, Google aims to elevate Gemini’s capabilities as a truly personalized assistant while offering users greater autonomy over their data and privacy preferences. The dual focus on responsive learning and stringent privacy ensures that interactions feel both intelligent and secure.
